New Evidence-Based Training Series
Most state and federal funding sources are requiring
use of evidence-based treatment models by qualified staff. This series
offers professionals in addictions, criminal justice and mental health a
training series to meet the new demands.
Matrix Model of Treatment (Adult)
This treatment modality is recognized as evidence based manual zed
treatment developed by the Matrix Institute. It is endorsed by NIDA,
CSAT and SAMSHA. This training will prepare participants to implement
and utilize the Matrix Model of Treatment. The presentation will include
a brief review of the effects of methamphetamine and stimulants, the
principals and components of the Matrix Model, which include triggers,
cravings, roadmap to recovery and families and addiction. It will also
include a brief review of the components of Matrix which includes
cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing. Participants
will also learn and apply the Matrix lesson plans.

-Adolescent)
This treatment modality is recognized as evidence-based manualized
treatment developed by the Matrix Institute. It is endorsed by NIDA,
CSAT and SAMSHA. This training will prepare participants to implement
and utilize the Matrix Model of Treatment.
The presentation includes a brief review of the effects of
methamphetamine and stimulants, the principals and components of the
Matrix Model, including triggers, cravings, roadmap to recovery and
families and addiction. It also includes a brief review of the
components of Matrix; cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational
interviewing. Participants will also learn and apply the Matrix lesson
plans This version addresses issues specific to treating teens.
Understanding Mental Health Disorders in Treatment of Addiction: A Guide
for the Professional
This training is designed to provide professionals a comprehensive
understanding of common mental health disorders in order to provide
improved integrated care. We will discuss these disorders and the
emerging treatment for each of the disorders. This training will be
helpful to addiction counselors to better understand the co-occurring
dynamics of addiction and mental health. It is also beneficial to mental
health professionals to better understand the relationship of addiction
and mental health disorders.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy - was developed specifically to treat
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) because conventional therapy was
proving to be problematic for this illness. Developed by Marsha Line
ham, Ph.D., at the University of Washington in Seattle, DBT focuses on
skills training for both internal and interpersonal processes. Both
individual and group therapy are part of the program. This training will
teach information and skill sets needed to utilize DBT in the treatment
process. DBT combines standard cognitive-behavioral techniques for
emotion regulation and reality-testing with concepts of distress
tolerance, acceptance, and mindful awareness. DBT may be the first
therapy that has been experimentally demonstrated to be generally
effective in treating personality disorders.
Systems of Care and Integration of Addiction and Primary Health Care
As healthcare systems change we must look at the way we currently do
business. This training will address the trends in integrated care and
how behavioral health can work with primary care successfully. We will
review new federal policy in the states and how other countries are
leading the way in the new framework.
Treating the Mandated Addicted Offender
This training offers participants working with mandated offenders;
evidence based treatment options and includes criminal thinking and
addiction, principals of treating the mandated offender. Case
presentations/videos will be utilized to promote group discussions in
the area of addressing both addiction and criminal thinking. Discusses
Thinking 4 Change, utilization of a modified Therapeutic Community with
evidence based practices. CBT and MI. Great training for addictions,
corrections, probation, parole and court professionals. This training
will also discuss CJ assessments, criminogenic factors, risk potential
and motivational indicators.
The Pharmacology and Neurobiology of Addiction
Alcohol and drugs change the brain chemistry in fundamental ways. This
training provides participants and opportunity to look at the process of
changing brain chemistry to enable them adapt appropriate treatment
protocols that match changing brain chemistry. It will also show the
process of triggers and cravings and how those affect the process of
recovery and relapse. Review various drugs and how they impact behavior
and treatments processes for drugs of abuse. Review signs, symptoms and
impact of drugs.
The presentation will show PET scans and videos that show how the brain
is affected and also show times frames on the brain healing process.

Legal & Ethical Aspects of Treatment: Avoiding Malpractice and Potential
Working in the addiction treatment arena requires not only special
clinical skills, but also considerable knowledge of certain legal
responsibilities. This training will review the legal requirements in
working with addiction populations. We will discuss with aspects of
CFR-42 and differences in HIPPA requirements. We will also discuss the
legal differences in working in a mental health arena and that of an
addiction arena. Clinicians not fully understanding differences in areas
such as subpoenas, open themselves up to significant potential legal
implications. This training will provide clinicians information to
protect themselves from typical malpractice issues and other common
legal concerns. This training is a must for beginning clinicians and all
licensed professionals.
Working With Personality Disorders, Co-Dependency, Trauma and Addictions
Professionals working in addiction and mental health know all too well
the challenges of working with co-occurring disorders of addiction,
personality disorders, co-dependency and trauma. This training will
provide information on new trends in treatment of these disorders and
how treatment professionals can manage these difficult behaviors. New
trends of treatment are now available to provide better treatment
outcomes. This is a great training for all treatment professionals to
better understand issues around these complex disorders.
The Resistant Client: Adult and Adolescent
This training will look at how to engage clients even when they are
considered treatment resistant, uncooperative or non-compliant. This
training will look at different tactics used by clients and how move
them thru Stages of Change and promote positive behavior change. Great
training for juvenile justice and corrections staff. This training will
also look at risk factors, evidence based models and how to utilize a
multi-modality treatment to obtain best possible outcomes even in
criminal justice programs and settings. We will also review adolescent
and adult brain chemistry, cognitive impairments and how to adapt

Co-Occurring Disorders: A Guide Through Tip 42
Research indicates that those who present for addiction treatment have
other clinical issues in addition to addiction. This training will teach
the difference in various models used for co-occurring disorders and
will specifically look at integrated multi-modality treatment and how
professionals can best implement this evidence based approach. Training
will particularly look at assessments. This training will provide a
guide thru NIDA TIP 42 and its recommendations. Also helpful for gaining
hours for new Co-Occurring certification offered by IC&RC.
Addiction Severity Index: Utilizing the ASI in Assessment and Treatment
This training will provide all healthcare professionals information on
how to utilize the Addiction Severity Index. This tool can be a vital
resource in the addiction assessment process. This instrument utilizes 5
categories for evaluation, addiction, mental health, primary health,
family and employment which can be used to determine appropriate
treatment and placement. In addition to the listed information this tool
provides specific components that summarize the clinical evaluation that
can be used and submitted for child welfare and court mandated
assessments. Private agencies, public agencies and private practice
professionals will find the information beneficial in improving
treatment care and outcomes even those utilizing public required

Understanding and Utilization of ASAM Criteria (American Society of
Addiction Medicine Patient Placement Criteria)
This training will assist professionals working in all areas of health
care in understanding how to utilize ASAM Patient Placement Criteria.
This tool is utilized not only by addiction professionals in the
treatment planning process but also by insurance companies, manage care
companies, and private and public agencies in the delivery of addiction
services. The training will review the fundamentals and how to utilize
the criteria and dimensions of ASAM.
Implementing Recovery Coaching Model into Treatment
The School of Social Work at the University of Illinois, indicates that
recovery coaches can significantly reduce the number of
substance-exposed births as well as help reunite substance-involved
families, saving state child-welfare systems millions of dollars in
foster-care and other placement costs. This latest research suggest that
Recovery Coaches, case workers with special training in addiction,
relapse prevention, case management and counseling improve treatment
outcomes. This training will teach basics of Recovery Coaching. These
specialized staff in addition to evidence based models provide a strong
foundation for long tern recovery. This training will teach basic case
management skills, addiction counseling and relapse prevention concepts
with evidence based model utilized in the Recovery Coaching model. With
reduced funding for intensive programs clients need alternatives to
supplement treatment. This will demonstrate how to implement the model.
Recommended for all staff but also case managers and child welfare
staff.
Treatment of Addiction and Criminality
This training will provide valuable information on assessment, treatment
and improved overall outcomes in working with clients with addiction and
criminality. Motivational Interviewing is a wonderful clinical tool used
by professionals. Information will be provided regarding utilization and
caution when using MI with anti-social personality disorders. The
training will also provide information the treatment professional must
have when working in the criminal justice system. Many issues related to
the client needs and treatment process involve understanding criminal
justice processes. The training will provide information related to
addiction, criminality and criminal justice systems.
Evidence-Based Practices in the Criminal Justice Setting
The addicted criminal justice client is one of the most difficult and
risky populations to treat. This training will look at evidence-based
methods that can be utilized in a criminal justice setting such as
jails, prisons and drug courts. This will address ways to handle
manipulation from the clients, decrease staff splitting, anti-social
behaviors. Treatment models of What Works, Thinking for Change, and
Matrix.
Multi-modality Evidence-Based Models of Treatment
One of the newest terms in working in integrated care is the utilization
of multi-.modality evidence-based approaches. SAMSHA and CSAT also look
for these key terms in grant funding and how agencies utilize these
principals. This training will review multi-modality approaches such as
Matrix Model, Motivational Interviewing, Contingency Management, DBT,
CBT and others in an integrated model. Once we define these models we
will look at the formation and utilization of a multi-modality treatment
approach and how your practice or agency can benefit.
The Anti-Social Personality
In working with criminal justice populations it is often difficult to
determine whether behavior is related to the addiction or if those
characteristics are anti-social in nature. This training will address
the DSM criteria for both diagnoses and separate the similarities and
differences in those behaviors and determine how to assess, treat
provide appropriate re-entry services for those with anti-social
behaviors.
Addiction, Conduct Disorders and Teens
Often not only does the teen present with addiction issues but has
become involved with the legal system or social service agencies due to
behavior related problems or a diagnosis of conduct disorder. This
training will look at the differences and similarities in DSM criteria
between substance dependence, abuse and conduct disorders. It will
address how treatment should address the different tactics used by teens
displaying both addictive behavior and problem conduct behavior.
Discussions of evidence based models and how these need to be adapted to
consider the conduct disorder issues. Will look at how to assess risk
potential and motivational indicators.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a short term comparatively brief
approach well suited to the resource capabilities of most clinical
programs. CBT has been extensively evaluated in rigorous clinical trials
and has solid empirical support as treatment especially for
methamphetamines. This presentation will provide participants with a
better understanding of the basics of this treatment modality and
changing behavior.
Latest Trends in Neuroscience of Addiction Treatment
The addiction field is rapidly changing. Not only do professionals need
to have excellent clinical skills, they also need an understanding of
the process of addiction and the process of recovery. Understanding the
neuroscience of addiction can assist clinicians in this process and how
to utilize certain treatment modalities at the right time and place
specific to the needs of the client. In addition to understanding the
neuroscience of addiction we will also discuss new trends in addiction
treatment and new medications used to treat addiction.
Test Preparation for the Certified Criminal Justice Addiction
Professional Certification
This training prepares those interested in becoming certified as a
criminal justice addiction professional. This credential has been
recognized by the National Drug Court Institute as a credential to meet
the demands of those who treat addicted offenders. This credential gives
participants a unique set of competencies to provide effective evidence
based treatment interventions. This credential prepares those testing
for the credential by reviewing standards and core requirements.
Methamphetamine and Treatment Modalities
This training offers participants a through understanding of the effects
and neurobiology of methamphetamine. It will review the history of meth
to its present devastating effects on individuals and communities across
the country. It also reviews the current most appropriate treatment
modalities for methamphetamines. Utilization of PET scans and brain
chemistry that demonstrates recovery is possible.
The Assessment
Of all the important dynamics of counseling the assessment is the most
important factor in positive outcomes. Without an accurate and
appropriate assessment critical information and processes are lost. This
training will specifically focus on assessment tools which are used for
various populations, addiction, criminal justice, adolescent and
co-occurring and how those needs are vastly different. Additional
processes that will provide vital information which is often overlooked.
This will also look at how to assess risk factors, motivational
indicators and criminogenic risks.
Motivational Interviewing: A Required Clinical Tool
Knowledge and skill in motivational interviewing are critical tools in
working with resistant and other client populations. The appropriate use
of motivational interviewing is also critical. Clinicians working with
clients with certain disorders such as personality and anti-social
personality disorders will need to use caution utilizing MI. This
training will discuss the typical use of Motivational Interviewing, but
also discuss some of the key issues and challenges in using MI with
certain disorders and populations. We will also address special skills
needed, how to adjust treatment and how and when to use MI with the more
challenging populations.
Addiction 101
This training is intended for those just starting in the field of
addiction or the audience that wants a basic understanding of addiction.
It will address specifics of alcohol and numerous other drugs including
methamphetamines. It will cover signs symptoms and effects of alcohol
and other drugs. Great for criminal justice staff and mental health
staff who want a better understanding of addiction and treatment.
Case Management and Substance Abuse Treatment: A Guide Thru TIP 27
This training will provide information on the functions and attitudes of
successful case management in a substance abuse treatment setting. We
will look at, screening, linking, client engagement, referral and
utilization of case management services.
Prescription Medication Addiction: Treatment for Successful Outcomes
Prescription medication dependency and abuse is a growing national
treatment issue. More and more clients are presenting with these
addictions along with medical and other co-occurring issues. This
training will look at the evidenced-based treatment options along with
the issues related to pharmacological interventions. We will also look
at how suboxone, naltrexone and other medications can work effectively
with behavioral interventions. Great new training for a growing
complicated problem for both adults and adolescents. This training will
also address the specific needs for military and veterans presenting
with prescription and pain medication disorders. We will also look at
the neurochemistry changes associated with prescription medication
addiction and how to integrate treatment based on that information.
Dynamics of the Group Process
The group process is a wonderful treatment tool when utilized
appropriately. This training will teach core skills in building the
group dynamic, proper engagement strategies, building the group as a
positive format, assessing resistance and how the group process can
become a motivating process.
Drug Courts, Re-entry, Addiction and Families: An Integrated Approach to
Treatment and Systems of Care
The trainings will look at those individuals involved in the justice
system and how the disease of addiction impacts not only the addicted
person but also the impact on families. We will look at how to integrate
systems of care that treat the whole family and how to access needed
services for the entire family structure. This training will also look
at how the correction community and treatment providers can work to
provide integrated services for those being released from prison
systems.
Addiction and Families
The training will address how addiction impacts not only the person
recovering from addiction, but changes the family will undergo as a life
of recovery begins. This training will assist in providing professionals
information on how to engage the families in the treatment process and
provide appropriate education on addiction from a family perspective. It
will also discuss the roles families take while during the addiction
process and then in the recovery process.
Legal and Ethical Issues in Addiction and Criminal Justice Treatment
Many professional working in addiction are not familiar with the
requirements of federal and state laws that impact addiction treatment.
This training will provide detailed information on how professionals,
community service workers, peer specialist and case managers can
navigate these complicated legal issues. We will review the differences
in HIPPA laws and CFR 42 and the requirements that must be followed by
all professionals. We will also discuss specific issues around ethics
and how professionals must respond to ethical challenges in a growing
and ever changing system that now includes electronic treatment issues.
The training will also provide information on requirements and new
topics of information regarding treatment and electronic therapy and

Comprehensive Treatment of Adolescent s with Substance Use Disorders
This training will take a comprehensive look at the components needed
for adolescent substance use disorders. We will look at assessment
needs, treatment issues, brain chemistry and the adolescent, family and
peer issues and integration of evidence-based services. Will we also
