Training Schedule
New Evidence-Based Training Series
Most state and federal funding sources are requiring
use of evidence-based treatment models by qualified staff. This series
offers professionals in addictions, criminal justice and mental health a
training series to meet the new demands.
Matrix Model of Treatment (Adult)
This treatment modality is recognized as evidence based manual zed
treatment developed by the Matrix Institute. It is endorsed by NIDA,
CSAT and SAMSHA. This training will prepare participants to implement
and utilize the Matrix Model of Treatment. The presentation will include
a brief review of the effects of methamphetamine and stimulants, the
principals and components of the Matrix Model, which include triggers,
cravings, roadmap to recovery and families and addiction. It will also
include a brief review of the components of Matrix which includes
cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing. Participants
will also learn and apply the Matrix lesson plans.

/Adolescent)
This treatment modality is recognized as evidence-based manualized

CSAT and SAMSHA. This training will prepare participants to implement
and utilize the Matrix Model of Treatment.
The presentation includes a brief review of the effects of methamphetamine and stimulants, the principals and components of the Matrix Model, including triggers, cravings, roadmap to recovery and families and addiction. It also includes a brief review of the components of Matrix; cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing. Participants will also learn and apply the Matrix lesson plans This version addresses issues specific to treating teens.
The Pharmacology and Neurobiology of
Addiction
Alcohol and drugs change the brain chemistry in fundamental ways. This
training provides participants and opportunity to look at the process of
changing brain chemistry to enable them adapt appropriate treatment
protocols that match changing brain chemistry. It will also show the
process of triggers and cravings and how those affect the process of
recovery and relapse. Review various drugs and how they impact behavior
and treatments processes for drugs of abuse. Review signs, symptoms and
impact of drugs.
The presentation will show PET scans and videos that show how the brain is affected and also show times frames on the brain healing process. NEW! Medications in the treatment of addiction. How new medications can help in treatment. Great training for mental health staff.
Treating the Mandated Addicted Offender
This training offers participants working with mandated offenders;
evidence based treatment options and includes criminal thinking and
addiction, principals of treating the mandated offender. Case
presentations/videos will be utilized to promote group discussions in
the area of addressing both addiction and criminal thinking. Discusses
Thinking 4 Change, utilization of a modified Therapeutic Community with
evidence based practices. CBT and MI. Great training for addictions,
corrections, probation, parole and court professionals. This training
will also discuss CJ assessments, criminogenic factors, risk potential
and motivational indicators.
Co-Occurring Disorders: A Guide Through
Tip 42
Research indicates that those who present for addiction treatment have
other clinical issues in addition to addiction. This training will teach
the difference in various models used for co-occurring disorders and
will specifically look at integrated multi-modality treatment and how
professionals can best implement this evidence based approach. Training
will particularly look at assessments. This training will provide a
guide thru NIDA TIP 42 and its recommendations. Also helpful for gaining
hours for new Co-Occurring certification offered by IC&RC.
The Resistant Client: Adult and Adolescent
This training will look at how to engage clients even when they are
considered treatment resistant, uncooperative or non-compliant. This
training will look at different tactics used by clients and how move
them thru Stages of Change and promote positive behavior change. Great
training for juvenile justice and corrections staff. This training will
also look at risk factors, evidence based models and how to utilize a
multi-modality treatment to obtain best possible outcomes even in
criminal justice programs and settings. We will also review adolescent
and adult brain chemistry, cognitive impairments and how to adapt
treatment based on cognitive functioning.
Criminal Thinking and Addiction
Most correctional practitioners admit that dealing effectively with
anti-social logic is the single most important part of public safety and
offender change. While they admit it is important staff also report they
lack the necessary understanding and skill to deal with criminal
thinking. This training will identify dynamic risk factors that lead to
criminal conduct, define cognitive risk, define criminal thinking and
thinking errors while addressing cognitive impairments.
Implementing Recovery Coaching Model into
Treatment
The School of Social Work at the University of Illinois, indicates that
recovery coaches can significantly reduce the number of
substance-exposed births as well as help reunite substance-involved
families, saving state child-welfare systems millions of dollars in
foster-care and other placement costs. This latest research suggest that
Recovery Coaches, case workers with special training in addiction,
relapse prevention, case management and counseling improve treatment
outcomes. This training will teach basics of Recovery Coaching. These
specialized staff in addition to evidence based models provide a strong
foundation for long tern recovery. This training will teach basic case
management skills, addiction counseling and relapse prevention concepts
with evidence based model utilized in the Recovery Coaching model. With
reduced funding for intensive programs clients need alternatives to
supplement treatment. This will demonstrate how to implement the model.
Recommended for all staff but also case managers and child welfare
staff.
Addiction, Conduct Disorders and Teens
Often not only does the teen present with addiction issues but has
become involved with the legal system or social service agencies due to
behavior related problems or a diagnosis of conduct disorder. This
training will look at the differences and similarities in DSM criteria
between substance dependence, abuse and conduct disorders. It will
address how treatment should address the different tactics used by teens
displaying both addictive behavior and problem conduct behavior.
Discussions of evidence based models and how these need to be adapted to
consider the conduct disorder issues. Will look at how to assess risk
potential and motivational indicators.
Evidence-Based Practices in the Criminal
Justice Setting
The addicted criminal justice client is one of the most difficult and
risky populations to treat. This training will look at evidence-based
methods that can be utilized in a criminal justice setting such as
jails, prisons and drug courts. This will address ways to handle
manipulation from the clients, decrease staff splitting, anti-social
behaviors. Treatment models of What Works, Thinking for Change, and
Matrix.
Case Management and Substance Abuse
Treatment: A Guide Thru TIP 27
This training will provide information on
the functions and attitudes of successful case management in a substance
abuse treatment setting. We will look at, screening, linking, client
engagement, referral and utilization of case management services.
The Anti-Social Personality
In working with criminal justice populations it is often difficult to
determine whether behavior is related to the addiction or if those
characteristics are anti-social in nature. This training will address
the DSM criteria for both diagnoses and separate the similarities and
differences in those behaviors and determine how to assess, treat
provide appropriate re-entry services for those with anti-social
behaviors.
Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing is a client centered counseling approach that
has been shown empirically to increase client retention and long term
change. MI can be integrated into most therapy modalities and existing
programs. Professionals can adapt techniques to their own counseling
style. Participants will better understand the concepts of motivational
interviewing, the spirit of MI and reflective listening techniques.
Great skill for use with all populations especially with teens and
mandated offenders.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a short term comparatively brief
approach well suited to the resource capabilities of most clinical
programs. CBT has been extensively evaluated in rigorous clinical trials
and has solid empirical support as treatment especially for
methamphetamines. This presentation will provide participants with a
better understanding of the basics of this treatment modality and
changing behavior.
Methamphetamine and Treatment Modalities
This training offers participants a through understanding of the effects
and neurobiology of methamphetamine. It will review the history of meth
to its present devastating effects on individuals and communities across
the country. It also reviews the current most appropriate treatment
modalities for methamphetamines. Utilization of PET scans and brain
chemistry that demonstrates recovery is possible.
Test Preparation for the Certified
Criminal Justice Addiction Professional Certification
This training prepares those interested in becoming certified as a
criminal justice addiction professional. This credential has been
recognized by the National Drug Court Institute as a credential to meet
the demands of those who treat addicted offenders. This credential gives
participants a unique set of competencies to provide effective evidence
based treatment interventions. This credential prepares those testing
for the credential by reviewing standards and core requirements.
Dynamics of the Group Process
The group process is a wonderful treatment tool when utilized
appropriately. This training will teach core skills in building the
group dynamic, proper engagement strategies, building the group as a
positive format, assessing resistance and how the group process can
become a motivating process.
The Assessment
Of all the important dynamics of counseling the assessment is the most
important factor in positive outcomes. Without an accurate and
appropriate assessment critical information and processes are lost. This
training will specifically focus on assessment tools which are used for
various populations, addiction, criminal justice, adolescent and
co-occurring and how those needs are vastly different. Additional
processes that will provide vital information which is often overlooked.
This will also look at how to assess risk factors, motivational
indicators and criminogenic risks.
Addiction and Families
The training will address how addiction impacts not only the person
recovering from addiction, but changes the family will undergo as a life
of recovery begins. This training will assist in providing professionals
information on how to engage the families in the treatment process and
provide appropriate education on addiction from a family perspective. It
will also discuss the roles families take while during the addiction
process and then in the recovery process.
Addiction 101
This training is intended for those just starting in the field of
addiction or the audience that wants a basic understanding of addiction.
It will address specifics of alcohol and numerous other drugs including
methamphetamines. It will cover signs symptoms and effects of alcohol
and other drugs. Great for criminal justice staff and mental health
staff who want a better understanding of addiction and treatment.
Legal and Ethical Issues in Addiction and
Criminal Justice Treatment
This training will address all the legal implications of CFR 42, HIPPA,
and related addiction laws and how professionals need to respond to
those laws. We will also discuss issues around how those laws can be
conflicting and how those can be handled appropriately. We will also
look and how professionals need to respond to common and not so common
ethical principals this is a great training for mental health and
criminal justice professionals as well.
Prescription Medication Addiction:
Treatment for Successful Outcomes
Prescription medication dependency and abuse is a growing national
treatment issue. More and more clients are presenting with these
addictions along with medical and other co-occurring issues. This
training will look at the evidenced-based treatment options along with
the issues related to pharmacological interventions. We will also look
at how suboxone, naltrexone and other medications can work effectively
with behavioral interventions. Great new training for a growing
complicated problem for both adults and adolescents. This training will
also address the specific needs for military and veterans presenting
with prescription and pain medication disorders. We will also look at
the neurochemistry changes associated with prescription medication
addiction and how to integrate treatment based on that information.
Comprehensive Treatment of Adolescent s
with Substance Use Disorders
This training will take a comprehensive look at the components needed
for adolescent substance use disorders. We will look at assessment
needs, treatment issues, brain chemistry and the adolescent, family and
peer issues and integration of evidence-based services. Will we also
discuss the difficult task of family involvement when treating an
adolescent.. This training will also provide information on new drugs
SPICE, SALVIA and prescription medications of abuse.
Drug Courts, Re-entry, Addiction and
Families: An Integrated Approach to Treatment and Systems of Care
The trainings will look at those individuals involved in the justice
system and how the disease of addiction impacts not only the addicted
person but also the impact on families. We will look at how to integrate
systems of care that treat the whole family and how to access needed
services for the entire family structure. This training will also look
at how the correction community and treatment providers can work to
provide integrated services for those being released from prison
systems.
